The Association of National Park Authorities brings together the 14 National Park Authorities of England, Scotland and Wales to raise the profile of the National Parks and to promote joint working.

 

Central Science Laboratories is an organisation dedicated to applying science in protection of food-chain safety and environmental health. Through developing and applying knowledge they support their customers in assessing risks, delivering sustainable environmental solutions and responding to emergencies.

 

The Countryside Council for Wales champions the environment and landscapes of Wales and its coastal waters as sources of natural and cultural riches, as a foundation for economic and social activity, and as a place for leisure and learning opportunities. They aim to make the environment a valued part of everyone's life in Wales.

 

The core purpose of the Department for Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is to improve the current and future quality of life. For the first time one department has brought together the interests of farmers and the countryside; the environment and the rural economy; the food we eat, the air we breathe and the water we drink. We do all this by integrating environmental, social and economic objectives - putting sustainable development into practice every day, and by championing sustainable development as the way forward for Government.

 

The Environment Agency plays an important role in conservation and ecology and is working to create an environment where wildlife can thrive, especially along rivers and in wetlands. The UK Biodiversity Action Plan is the Government's initiative for nature conservation and The Environment Agency is helping to achieve its goals.

 

Environment Wales is a partnership in the voluntary sector, funded by the Welsh Assembly Government. Their aim is to contribute to sustainable development by supporting and encouraging voluntary action to protect and improve the environment.

 

The Forestry Commission has the mission to protect and expand Britain's forests and woodlands and increase their value to society and the environment.

 

The Joint Nature Conservation Committee is the statutory adviser to Government on UK and international nature conservation. Its work contributes to maintaining and enriching biological diversity, conserving geological features and sustaining natural systems. JNCC delivers the UK and international responsibilities of the four country nature conservation agencies - Council for Nature Conservation and the Countryside, the Countryside Council for Wales, Natural England and Scottish Natural Heritage.

 

The National Biodiversity Network (NBN) is a new and innovative way of sharing wildlife information in the UK and is building tools to make this information accessible in a digitised and exchangeable form. By providing easy access to the information people need about wildlife, wise and informed decisions can be made to ensure our natural environment is diverse, rich and sustainable now and for future generations.

 

The National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens was founded to combine the talents of botanists, horticulturalists and conservationists with the dedication of keen amateur and professional gardeners. The NCCPG's aims are to: encourage the propagation and conservation of endangered garden plants in the British Isles, encourage and conduct research into cultivated plants, and encourage the education of the public in garden plant conservation.

 

Natural England has been formed by bringing together English Nature, the landscape, access and recreation elements of the Countryside Agency and the environmental land management functions of the Rural Development Service. Natural England will work for people, places and nature, to enhance biodiversity, landscapes and wildlife in rural, urban, coastal and marine areas; promoting access, recreation and public well-being, and contributing to the way natural resources are managed so that they can be enjoyed now and in the future.

 

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency is Scotland’s environmental regulator and adviser, responsible to the Scottish Parliament through Ministers. As well as their role in controlling pollution, they work with others to protect and improve our environment.

 

The UK Biodiversity Action Plan (UKBAP) was published in January 1994 in response to Article 6 of the Biodiversity Convention, to develop national strategies for the conservation of biological diversity and the sustainable use of biological resources.
