Not all Ladybirds are Good
There are 46 ladybird species that are considered to be residents of the UK, with 26 being easily recognisable as ladybirds.
In addition, we now also have three introduced species and one of these, the Harlequin ladybird (Harmonia axyridis), is a voracious predator that could have a serious impact on our native insects, which it easily out-competes.
The UK Ladybird Survey and its sister organisation the Harlequin Ladybird Survey are attempting to keep track of our native and introduced ladybird species. By monitoring their populations it is hoped that the impact of the alien species can be measured and mitigated against.
For more information, or if you have seen a harlequin ladybird go to the UK Ladybird Survey website or to the University of Cambridge Harlequin Ladybird Information Page.

If you have an image that captures an aspect of UK conservation then send it in with a brief description and we will put in the CI-UK Gallery.

Spectacular, but Vulnerable Habitats
There can be few landscapes as spectacular as the Cornish coastline. It is a highly specialised ecosystem with a huge diversity of wildlife and habitats, but it is also a fragile ecosystem which must be protected and managed correctly.
